Plants shrubs or small trees up to 9m tall; young branchlets almost glabrous to densely pubescent with short and/or long hairs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, petioles 4-35mm long; blades usually narrowly elliptic to ovate or obovate, rarely suborbicular to rhombic, 1.8-10.8 cm long, 1.3-7 cm wide; base rounded to cuneate, tip usually obtuse and apiculate to subtruncate or rounded, rarely emarginate; margins entire to serrate or crenate, at least distally; both surfaces sparsely to densely pubescent when young, often soon glabrescent, never scabrous. Inflorescences lax to dense, pedunculate, peduncles (4.5)8-34 mm long, pubescent to almost glabrous. Flowers pedicellate, apparently functionally unisexual. Calyx tubular-campanulate in flower, funnel- or cup-shaped in fruit, 2.5-6 mm long in flower, 3.8-8 mm long and 5-8 mm in diameter in fruit, (2)3-4-lobed, not prominently veined, exterior sparsely to densely pubescent. Corolla white or cream, tube 2-5 mm long, with 4-5(6) lobes; staminate flowers with 4(5) stamens and very reduced pistillode, pistillate flowers with stigmatic branches 1-7 mm long. Fruit a drupe, orange when ripe, 7.5-13 mm long, 5-8 mm in diameter.
