Plants perennial herbs, 45-90 cm tall, often with a woody rootstock, often much branched from the base. Stems fairly densely pubescent, particularly below the nodes, with white spreading hairs 0.3-1 mm long. Leaves: petioles 5-11(-40_ mm long; blades 20-30(-67) mm long, 8-16(-37) mm wide, lanceolate, base attenuate, tip acute, surfaces sparsely to densely pubescent with antrorse hairs 0.3-1 mmm long, especially towards the base of young leaves. Infloresceences dense, terminal spikes on peduncles 10-45 mm long; bracts up to 40 mm long, 8 mm wide, becoming smaller towards the top of the inflorescence, lanceloate to elliptic, with pubescence similar to that of the leaves, sometimes also ciliate with hairs up to 1.5 mm long; bracteoles to 15-20 mm long, 5.5-8 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, less hairy than the bracts. Calyx lobes 9-10 (-13) mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide in flower, becoming 12-13(16) mm long in fruit, triangular-subulate, densly pubescent with fine spreading hairs about 0.1 mm long; corollas about 18-25 mm long, cream with green spots, lobes about 7 mm long; anthers 2.5-3 mm long, the cells slightly slightly displaced by up to 1 mm; capsules up to 27 mm long, sterile in the lower 2/5 densely pubescent spreading or appressed hairs about 0.2 mm long and also subsessile glandular hairs. Seeds flattened, tuberculate, with an irregular outline.
Asysasia guttata grows in acacia woodlands, grasslands, and thickets in rocky limestone areas at elevations of 200-1400 m. It is widespread in tropical Africa.
