Plants subshrubs or herbs, usually with simple hairs, sometimes with branched, hairs. Inflorescences raceme-like, open, often with recurved flowers; bracts distinctly smaller than the leaves; bracteoles absent. Calyces 5-lobed; upper lobes lare, concave, decurrent along the distal third of the tubes; lateral lobes with wide bases and subulate tips; lower lobes subulate and longer than lateral lobes; corollas strongly 2-lipped; tubes straight, narrowly to broadly cylindrical; upper lips 3-4-lobed. almost flat; lower lips shallowly boat-shaped; stamens growing from the distal part of the corolla tube, not exceeding the tubes, posterior pairs of stamens sterile; styles not exceeding the corolla tubes, branches minute. Nutlets ovoid, minutely bullate, glabrous.
Fuerstia is a genus of 9 species, all of which are native to tropical Africa. One species, Fuerstia dendrothrix, grows in Somaliland. It is not known from any other location.
