Plants perennial; ligules composed of a line of hairs. Inflorescences racemose, with numerous, closely spaced, reflexed spikelets hanging on slender pedicels. Spikelets with several florets, falling together and with the pungent or hooked pedicels; florets gradually increasing in size distally; lemmas keeled, glabrous except for the ciliolate margins, entire, acute to setaceously acuminate; paleas gibbous, with winged keels. Caryopses laterally compressed, obliquely elliptic.
Harpache is a genus of 3 species, two being native to North and Northeast Africa and Arabia, the third to central China. One species, Harpachne schimperi is known from Somaliland. None are known from Somalia.
