Plants annual or perennial. Leaf sheaths and blades with gland-tipped hairs, often viscid. Inflorescences dense, narrow panicles, the spikelets all alike. Spikelets with 4-6(-9) florets, the top 1-2 florets sterile and reduced; glumes strongly (7)9-11-veined; lemmas subcoriaceous, hairy below midlength, 6-lobed, the lobes hylaine, sometimes awn-tipped, alternating with 5 scabridulous awns.
Schmidtia includes two species, both of which grow in Africa. One species, Schmidtia pappophoroides, grows in both Somaliland and Somalia and also in Cape Verde and Pakistan.
