Plants tufted perennials, often short-lived, up to 75 cm tall; internodes glabrous. Panicles contracted; branches and pedicels long, filiform. Glumes unequal, narrowly lanceolate, 3-veined, glabrous or sparsely hairy; lower glumes 7-18 mm long, shortly bifid, midveins excurrent; upper glumes 9-10.5 mm long, narrowing into a short awn; lemmas (including the callus) 2.5-3 mm long, papillose-scabrous; columns 6.5-10 mm long, pilose, especially or only where the awn divides into 3; central awn 3-4 cm long, usually plumose throughout, sometimes thinly so on the lower portion, sometimes the tip glabrous; lateral awns 0.8-1.2 cm long. glabrous.
Stipagrostis uniplumis, grows in acacia-Commiphora bushland over limestone at 300-1070 m. It is known from regions N1-2 and C1-2 pf the Flora of Somalia. Its native range extends from southern Africa to India. There are three varieties recognized. Only Stipagrostis uniplumis var. uniplumis is known from Somalilland and Somalia.
