Plants annual, usually producing many culms. Culms (12)20-44 cm tall (including inflorescences); prostrate and geniculate at base, then ascending. Leaves somewhat crowded at base, evenly distributed distally; sheath margins ciliate distally; blades 2.5 - 6 cm long, 2 - 4 mm wide, linear-acuminate. Inflorescences spikelike, 1.5 - 3.5 cm long, 3 - 9 mm wide, narrowly ovoid, with 1(2) rudmentary spikelets at the base, 2(3) fertile spikelets distally; disarticulation in the rachis, above the rudimentary spikelet(s). Spikelets sessile, 0.6-1 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, ellipsoid, 0.8 -1.5 times the length of the adjacent internode, with 2-4(5) florets, only the lower (1)2 - 3 florets fertile. Glumes 2, green to purplish-green, coriaceous, ovate-oblong, adpressed-velutinous or scabrous, veins unequally spaced, unequally wide, yellowish; glumes of lower spikelets 8 - 10 mm long, tip truncate, extending into 2-3 awns; glumes of upper spikelets 5 - 8 mm long, terminating in 3 awns.
