Plants shrubs or small trees with slender branches. Leaves alternate, without stipules, simple, scaled-like to ericoid. Inflorescences of solitary flowers or in racemes or spikes. Flowers small, radially symmetric, usually bisexual; sepals and petals 4-5, free, imbricate; stamens 4 to many; filaments usually free, sometimes united, inserted on a disc; anthers with 2 thecae, opening by longitudinal slits; ovaries superior, of 3-5 carpels, 1-celled, with parietal or basal placentation; styles as many as he carpels. Fruits capsules; seeds with numerous long hairs.
The family Tamaricaceae includes 5 genera and about 87 species. It is widespread in Eurasia and North Africa. It is especially common in North Africa and Central Asia.
