Plants trees and shrubs, unarmed or with axillary spines. Leaves opposite, stipule, if developed, very small; blades simple, entire, usually leathery. Inflorescences dense, axillary. Flowers radially symmetric, bisexual or unisexual; calyces shortly 2-lobed or divided; corollas with 4 separate petals; stamens 4, filaments free or united at the base into a tube or attached near the base of the petals, anthers with 2 thecae, opening by longitudinal slits, small glands sometimes prsent between the filaments; ovaries superior, 1-2-celled, with 1-2 ovules per cell; styles short. Fruits usually 1-seeded berries or drupes.
Salvadoraceae includes three genera. It extends from Africa and Madagascar through the MIddle East to INdia and south-east ASia, mostly in arid regions.
