Plants herbs, woody climbers, or subshrubs. Leaves alternate or opposite; blades simple or compaound or variously compound or dissected. Inflorescences usually terminal and with many flowers, sometimes of solitary flowers. Flowers radially or bilaterally symmetric; sepals free, often petalid; petals free, occasionaly absent; stamens usually numerous and spirally arranged; ovaries superior. 1-many, usually of separate carpels, sometimes the carpels united into a compound oovary; ovules 1-many. Fruits achenes, follicles, berries, or capsules; seeds without arils, with endosperm; embryos minute.
The family Ranunculaceae includes about 50 genera and 2000 species, It is widespread, particularly in temperate and boreal regions of both the New and Old Worlds.
