Plants ferns but with blades having simple leaves, shortly rhizomatous. Leaves not circinate in bud, consisting of a sterile blade and earing a fertile spike or panicle of spikes. Sporangia large and thick-walled, dehiscing by a split into 2 valves; spores homosporous (all looking alike).
The family Ophioglossaceae includes 3 genera and about 70-80 species. It is worldwide in distribution.
