Plants slender shrubs with green twigs, usually unisexual. Leaves opposite or whorled, these usually reduced to short sheaths. Strobili compound, the axes bearing paorts of bracts subtending microsporangiate or ovulate shoots. Mature femal strobilis globose, with 1-3 seeds surrounded by 2 pairs of red or yellow fleshy bracts.
The family Ephedraceae inludes only one genus, Ephedra. Onelyone species is known from somaliland and Somalia, Ephedra foliata.
