Leaves alternate, often minute and close together, each axil with tufts of hairs or hairline scales or a membranous, often scarious scale usuallyoverlapping with other scales and concealing the leaves. Inflorescences terminal, either of more or less sessile flowers or elongated and raceme-like. Flowers opening for a very short time, sometimes cleistogamous; bracts membranous or divided into narrow segments; sepals united at the base; petals 5; stamens 5-many, bases united with the petals; ovaries superior, with many ovules; styles threadlike; stigmas entire or 3-lobed. Fruits elongated capsules with 3-4-valves, valves sometines divided longitudinally; seeds many, winged or with slight protruberances.
Anacamperos includes 50-70 species, most of which grow only in southern Africa but there are 1-2 in Australia and about the same number in Somaliland. The Flora of Somalia included two species but one of these, Anacamperos has since been found to belong to Portulaca wightiana. This possibility is mentioned in volume 1 of the Flora of Somalia. The other species known from Somaliland is Anacamperos vespertina which had not been named when volume 1 was published but had been in time for its name, and a more complete description, to be included in volume 3 which was published in 2006.
