Culms 70-210 cm. Panicles about twice as long as wide, open, erect, exserted; branches ascending to spreading; pulviniwell-developed. Upper florets blackish, shiny, disarticulating at maturity.
Panicum miliaceum subsp. ruderale is now naturalized over much of the Flora region. It may become a major weed, especially in corn fields.
