Plants herbs or shrubs. Leaves entire, sometimes with undulate margins. Inflorescences open to dense spikes or racemes. Calyces with 5 unequal lobes; corollas with funnel-shaped tubes and 5 unequal lobes; stamens 4; anthers 2-celled. Capsules 4-seeded; seeds tuberculate with irregular margins or smooth and glabrous with even margins.
Asystasia is an Old World genus of about 50 species, the majority of which are native to tropical Africa. Three grow in Somaliland, four in Somalia.
