Plants evergreen trees up to 40-55(-60) m tall 1-2 m in diameter, conical; bark grey, scaly; branches whorled, mostly horizontal, young branches usually pendulous, pale, glabrous; with peg-like processes bearing the leaves. Leaves needle-like, 3-5 cm long, 4-angled, withinconspicuous stomatal lines. Cones pendulous, broadly cylindrical conic, 9-16 cm long, 3 cm in diameter when closed, becoming 5-6 cm in diameter after pollination; cone scales stiff and smoothly rounded;seeds small, winged.
Picea smithiana grows in the Himalayas, from Afghanistan to central Nepal. It differs from other species of Picea in its long needles.
