Plants trees 2.5-15 m tall with rounded-spreading crowns; bark rather smooth, buff or grey. Leaves with small, deciduous, subulate stipules; pinnae 2-12 pairs; leaflets (8-)11-25 pairs, linear-oblong, 4-17 mm long, 1.25-4 mm wide, both surfaces appressed puberulous. Racemes with 5-10 flowers; bracts subtending the flowers small, deciduous before the flowers open. Petals 1.6-3.8 cm long, blade rounded or sharply pointed and lacerate, the upper smaller than the others and pale yellow, the remainder white, all becoming apricot or yellow; filament (3-)6-11 cm long, red; ovary hairy. Pods 13-25 cm long, 2-3.7 cm wide; seeds oblong-elliptic, flattened, 12-15 mm long, 5-8 mm wide, mottled.
Delonix elata grows in Acacia-Commiphora bushland, often on rocky slopes or by streams at elevations up to 1000 m. It grows from Egypt south to eastern Zaire and Tanzania and east to Arabia and India.
