Plants bulbous; bulbs up to 12 cm in diameter, with a distinct neck. Leaves spreading on the ground in 2 opposite fans, 1-3 cm wide, lengths varying with age, appearing before to after the flowers. Inflorescences scapose, with 10-30 flowers; scapes 5-25 cm long; pedicels 1-4 cm long. Flowers pink fading to magenta with age or white, sweetly scented; tubes 6-10 cm long; lobes 4-8 cm long, 0.3-0.5 cm wide, spirally recurved towards the tips at flowering time; stamens slightly spreading, pink or white, 3-6 cm long; anthers 4-9 mm long, curved. Fruits reddish, subglobose, 2-2.5 cm in diameter.
Ammocharis tinneana grows in coastal area on open plains or coral sannd or fixed sand dunes at elevations up to 200 m. It is known from regions C1, S1, and S3 of the the Flora of Somalia and from Ethiopia west to Chad and south to Namibia and Botswana.
