Plants much-branched shrubs of small trees; branches glabrous, sometimes spine-tipper. Leaves oblanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, without glandular dots. Hypanthia more or less urceolate, red, leathery; sepals persistent; petals pbovate, bright red. Fruits globose, leathery berries 5-10 cm in diameter; seeds many, tightly packed, 3-5 mm across, with thick, juicy translucent, often reddish outer layer.
Punica granatum is grown for its attractive flowers and edible fruits. It is known from regions N1, N3, and S2 of the Flora of Somalia. It is probably native to Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan.
