Inventory Projects

Djibouti's plants

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth & Fatouma Mohamed Abdoul-Latif
The goal of this project is make information available about Djibouti's plants.

Global taxonomic lists

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth
Checklists provide a useful approach to providing others with easy access to taxon pages. Checklists in this category are not restricted to a political region.

Grasses of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth, J. Gabriel Sanchez-Ken, Garrett Billings, and Sandy Long (Editors)
OpenHerbarium is being used to reconstruct a website equivalent to, but better, than the old Webmanual site. Until we obtain funding, progress will be slow. The initial focus is on making resources from the two FNA volumes on grasses available but In December 2018, Sanchez-Ken agreed to allow us to share data from his checklist for grasses of Mexico (Acta Botanica Mexicana 126) via OpenHerbarium and to work jointly on the site. For now, those working in Mexico will be able to see the grasses of the country as a whole and for each state plus illustrations, images, and descriptions from those taxa also known from north of the US-Mexican border.

Grasses of Madagascar

Managers: Maria Vorontsova and Mary Barkworth
Vorontsova is working on the grasses of Madagascar. Barkworth is using her work to demonstrate features of OpenHerbarium.

Iraqi Flora

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth, Hadeel Al-Newani

Medicinal plants

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth
These checklists are for papers on medicinal plants that are not restricted to a single country.

Pakistan's Plants and Fungi

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth

These checklists come from research in Pakistan. The regional checklists are being used to build a checklists for Khyber Pakhtunkwa and for Pakistan as a whole. The Pakistan checklist also draws from records cited in the Flora of Pakistan but not all such records are in OpenHerbarium. Images for some of the taxa cited in the checklists are in the network. Any checklist can be viewed in image format by opening it up, then checking the appropriate box in the yellow tool panel that will be on the top right and then rebuilding the list. If you wish to share a checklist, please contact me (mary.barkworth [at] usu.edu) and I shall send you instructions both for creating them and for making them available.

Somaliland

Managers: Mary E. Barkworth
Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. It corresponds to British Somaliland. Some of the resources listed here are for both Somaliland and Somalia either because they were prepared between 1968 and 1991, when Somaliland was part of Somalia, or because they have been developed by agencies that work only in terms of countries recognied by the United Nations.

South Sudan

Teaching checklists

Managers: Mary Barkworth
Many projects and classes require that the participants learn to recognize a set of species or genera and some important aspects of each taxon, such as its family, preferred habitat, ethnobotanical value, or whether or not it is a weed. Developing teaching checklists can help participants with this. They are most effective when there are multiple high quality images of the taxa because then they can be used with the "Flash card quiz" feature (listed under games). When showing people this quiz feature, ask them what features shown in the images are useful for its identification. The feature will offer as many images as there are in the system. Having multiple images of the same species will help students learn to recognize the taxon, not just the image.
