Collection Profile for:
Flora of Pakistan (FoPK)

The Flora of Pakistan is a multi-volume work, which was started in 1971 and completed in 2021. Th editors of the first volume were Drs. E. Nasir and S.I. Ali, the last volume by Drs. S.I. Ali and M. Qaiser. The home base of the project was the University of Karachi but, in 2000, it partner with the Missouri Botanical Gardern treatment in making its contents available online.

A notable feature of the Flora is its inclusion of extensive specimen citations. The collection location of almost all specimens is given in terms of a 2° grid. Many also include a verbal description of the locality. The grid references were used to georeference the records, the geographic coordinates of a grid cell being those of its centroid and the coordinate uncertainty the distance to the corners, 293,295m. The records in this "collection" are based on these citations but the they reflect only presence/absence of a species in a grid, not the individual specimens. Consequently, they provide only a very coarse-grained map.

Databasing the records was a project led by Mary Barkworth and Sara Wilkinson-Lamb but the data used was designed by Boyd and the work conducted by inmates at the Daggett County Jail. Unfortunately, the jail was closed before the project could be completed. The existing data were uploaded here to help demonstrate how much information some floras provide, encourage the use of record sharing during flora development, and build the nomenclatural backbone for OpenHerbarium.
